THANKS – giving

THANKS – giving

It’s that time of year when we are reminded of all the things we have to be grateful for. I love the quote, “Gratitude is the open door to abundance” (unknown author). As we reflect on all the things we are thankful for this Thanksgiving, let’s not only give thanks, but pass on a reason for others to be thankful.

4 Simple Ways to Show Thanks for your Abundance

Gratitude is the open door to abundance - Julia Nicholson - Healthy Sexy Life

1) Help some who can’t repay you

One of my teammates told a story about a homeless man that has lived on the same corner for 9 years; let’s call him Sam. This man has a mental disorder and barks at people as they walk past him. Most people would be scared of Sam, but not my friend. She got to know him. After not seeing Sam for 4 years, she walked past him last weekend and he called her by name. She touched his life so much that he remembered her!

After telling this story another one of my teammates said, “I know Sam, my boyfriend and I are near that area often and we always ask him what he wants for lunch and then we go there so we can bring him back a plate.” I mean WOW!! Is that not amazing!?!

2) Acknowledge someone who is under-appreciated

I know it sounds so simple, but how often do we rush through the checkout line at the grocery store or the coffee shop? Taking the time to truly acknowledge someone and looking them in the eye, or heaven forbid, use their name (because most of the time they are wearing a name tag).  Also, don’t forget those people who have really important jobs, but are often overlooked.

  • Accountant/bookkeeper
  • People you trust to keep your children
  • People who deliver your mail/packages
  • Administrative professionals
  • Hairstylist (talk about an important job)
  • Fitness Instructors
  • Chiropractors/massage therapists

Sending them a $5 gift card to say “coffee on me” or just a note of appreciation is huge.

3) Make a meal

I love to batch cook, so if I’m making a fabulous one-pot-wonder, it’s just as easy to double the recipe. You can keep one for yourself and package the second meal up for someone special.

  • Someone with a new baby
  • Someone sick or recovering
  • An elder person who doesn’t want to cook for one
  • Someone who needs some extra love

You can even make a black friday meal. If post-holiday shopping is a tradition for someone you know, you know they will be exhausted by the afternoon. It’s all about showing someone you were thinking about them and you took the time to make them something special.

4) Volunteer

Sometimes money isn’t a luxury people have to show thanks, but time is something most people have. Taking an hour a week during the holidays to serve others can make a major impact.

  • Serve on a ministry at church (most churches have a notes and cards ministry which is something you can do from home)
  • Help a widow or elderly person with household chores (changing a light bulb can be difficult for an 80 year old, plus let’s be real, your company is what they most value).
  • Volunteer at a nursing home, food pantry, or soup kitchen
  • Find a children’s charity. Spend time teaching children they matter and there is someone that cares.
