How to Rev Up Your Personal Style

How to Rev Up Your Personal Style

Have you ever looked in your stuffed closet and thought, “Ugh I have nothing to wear!” Um, duh! All of us have found ourselves in that spot so many times. Nothing looks right, and nothing seems quite appropriate for the occasion. Honestly though, have you ever thought that maybe you’ve grown out of your clothes? Not literally, but just that you have changed and so your clothes don’t seem to quite “fit” you anymore. We lose touch of what we really like to wear, or we decide that our clothes no longer suit our lifestyle.

This is where personal style can save your wardrobe woes.

Developing personal style takes some dedication, focus, and conscious shopping. But it’s definitely not a chore! It’s so fun to shop in your own closet and your favorite shops to find pieces that perfectly fit your body, lifestyle, and your personality!

  1. Think about your lifestyle: Are you a busy stay-at-home mom juggling kids and maybe a part-time job at home? Are you a high-ranking employee of a prestigious office? Do you work in a casual, artsy office where jeans day is everyday? Do you live in a city where you walk everywhere or are you commuting in your car? Ask yourself which clothes fit your lifestyle. What do you feel most comfortable wearing in your day-to-day life?
  2. Don’t worry about trends: I don’t know about you, but I love following trends, but it can be draining to always keep up with the latest. It can be super fun to buy a piece or two of the latest to work into your wardrobe, but don’t go overboard. Personal style means that your clothes suit you, not you suiting the signs of the times.

  3. Find a muse: The Internet has given us such a great opportunity to see actresses and singers with awesome personal style. Maybe you like classic muses like Audrey Hepburn or modern beauties like Lauren Conrad or Jennifer Aniston. Seek out people who wear clothes you think look lovely (and suit your lifestyle, of course). Search some of their photos, especially their casual street style, and zero-in on pieces you like. Also, consider your personality. If you are more shy, you might have trouble emulating Rhianna’s crop-tops. If you are extremely feminine, Alexa Chung’s hipster vibes may not suit you. Admire from afar!

Find a muse is a fun way to get some style inspiration and see what you really love!

  4. Comb your closet: Your closet can reveal a lot about you and what you like. You may find tons of jeans and tees or cute little dresses. I say, don’t reinvent the wheel. There’s a reason why you love what you love, so stick with it. You can buy more pieces that are Rev up your personal style- www.JuliaNicholson.commissing and work with what you have. If you see a piece that doesn’t suit your idea of personal style, find another home for it. Take note of what you need or a special piece that would suit what you already have and spice things up a bit.
  5. Shop Authentically: Now, the fun part! Go shopping! It’s tempting to sweep through the store and grab something impulsively, but you’re on a mission here! Make a list of the ideas you are looking for and head to the stores that best fit your style (your muse and a little bit of research) can help you with this. Don’t rush yourself, and be discerning. Try on everything to make sure it fits well and goes together well.

Remember, have fun and stay true to your instincts! You will really enjoy your closet when everything in it fits you and your healthy, sexy life!
